Discover the lake: with its typical small villages among which Bellagio stands out, known as the “pearl of lake Como.” Other notable destinations are Menaggio, Varenna and Lenno. Discover the princely villas, with their marvelous botanical gardens: Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbianello, and Villa Melzi. Swimming, canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing are available.
Take a boat leaving from Como and enjoy the views.
Hiking: the surrounding mountains and woods offer numerous itineraries: from Brunate you may admire the town from above, reach the Faro Voltiano and trek along the Dorsale del Triangolo Lariano trail, toward Bellagio, breathtaking vistas guaranteed! Or take up the la via dei Monti Lariani trail from Cernobbio, toward the high lake, or even the Green Way from Colonno to Tremezzo, to discover the ancient via Regina and views of the lake and its hamlets, or you may take a walk in the Spina Verde park.
Take the cable car from Como and enjoy the panoramic view!
Visit the city: Como offers many interesting options. You can trace the footsteps of the great physicist Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery. You can learn more about silk by visiting the silk museum. You may immerse yourself in pre-Roman, Roman, and Medieval Como, visiting the Museo Civico, the Sant’Abbondio church, the Cathedral, and the medieval Broletto. You may discover Como as the birthplace of modern rationalist architecture with works by noted architects Terragni e Sant’Elia.
Walking in the streets of the historical downtown, you can shop and buy made in Como silk, for which our city enjoys world-wide renown.
Every September you will be able to attend the Palio del Baradello, a costume re-enactment of the history of the city taking place downtown.
Take the bus across the street from the Hostel
or the pedestrian walkway (15 minutes
to downtown) and have a good visit.
Our suggestions aren’t over:
right behind the hostel, Villa Olmo offers the closest goal for a visit. You will not tire of admiring it, walking in its gardens, or sitting on the bench in front of the lake.
The more sports-oriented visitors may rent our bicycles (mountain bikes, with helmet and lock included in the price) and discover the beauties of the lake while riding, or simply ride around town or to the nearest villages such as Cernobbio or Torno, or nearby Switzerland (Chiasso). You may rent a bike all day, just for the afternoon, or for a few hours.
Only 3 km (2 miles) away, Switzerland offers interesting ideas, such as visits to Lugano, Locarno e Bellinzona.
Duomo Milano
Como’s location make it an excellent base-camp location to visit Milan, which is only 40km away. There are two railway connections for Milan (Trenitalia and TreNord), with trains every hour. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the metropolis famous for its Duomo, the Teatro alla Scala, the streets famous for shopping and fashion, while staying in the quieter and more romantic location of lake Como.
For a unique experience: fly the floatplanes over lake Como. Expensive but spectacular!
